Early Puppy Socialization

One of the things we are proud about is that our brittany puppies are extremely well socialized. They are handled daily from their first hours of life and this makes a big difference. A well socialized puppy is a puppy that is ready for anything. By the time our puppies go home at 7-8 weeks old they have been introduced to many new things. We take them on walks, they meet horses, cats, other dogs, people, mud, water, birds, noises, bugs, bikes, etc… We take them for rides in the car. We get them used to a collar and a leash, loading into a dog crate. More time with kids and meeting strangers, playing with them and retrieving toys. The results? Hunter goes home to Alberta, Canada

You just never know where Annabella Brittany puppies are going to end up. Hunter was the only male in a litter between Buster and Sadie. He has found an excellent home in Canada with a lot of room to roam. I took a little road trip to meet the new owners in Idaho for the exchange. We are always so happy to find just the perfect homes for our brittany puppies. A short note from his new family.

“Hunter is already twice the size he was when i picked him up, he grows fast. He got his shots up dated yesterday and did not care much for it. Thank you again for him we all just love him to death. My husband Karl started running with him, he has a ton of energy. He already runs about 8 kms before he starts to tucker out. Thanks again we will send you some more pictures again if you like.”

Brittany Puppies and Pumpkins

Our latest litter of brittany puppies are getting to that fun stage around 4 weeks old. They are starting to romp and play and their little personalities are beginning to blossom. We have two liver and white puppies available from this litter, one male and one female. Should be excellent foot hunting dogs as well as family companions. They are getting plenty of socialization from my seven children. Feel free to email or call us if you are interested.

Annie X Buster Puppies Expected

We are expecting an excellent foot hunting litter of brittany puppies around April 19th. Annie has been bred to Buster and we are expecting white/liver and white/orange brittany pups. Annie and Buster have been my number one guide dogs these past few years at the pheasant farm. They both have a good nose and have pointed and retrieved hundreds of pheasants. Buster is DNA certified and comes from Dave Walker kennels in Idaho. Annie has been with our family for 5 years and has a sweet temperment. Email us if you are interested in a great hunting companion. You can place a deposit to hold your pick for $200. One male is still with us and entering his bird dog training for fall pheasant season.

Working with Puppies

One of my favorite things in dog training is starting a young puppy. It is such a joy to watch their instincts come to life and see them blossom before your very eyes. Most bird dogs have the natural ability to be a good hunting companion. It is a rare brittany that does not have these instincts deeply ingrained. My kids love to help with the naming of young puppies. Hannah and me decided to name this big boy “Bubba”. We brought him home with his sister “Lexie” to start in our gun dog training program. Both puppies have strong pointing instincts.

Lexie is pictured below pointing a wing on a string. She is quite a bit smaller than her brother Bubba but she makes up for it in attitude. We will be training both of these pups to sell in the fall to hunting homes. They are AKC registered and are up to date on their shots.

Tri-color Brittany Female

Polly - Female Tri-color Brittany

This is Lizzy’s sister and littermate Polly. She became available to me because her tri-color markings came in too heavy to be in show competitions. She has good bird drive and loves to get out and run. She moves well and holds her tail nice and high. She is currently in training with my personal friend who wanted to try a Brittany after years of shorthairs. We will try to get some pictures of her dog training.

Bob in California with his new Brittany Pup

Bob had to wait until Christmas to find out what his daughter had purchased him. This little Brittany female was my personal favorite of the litter. She had a lot of prey drive when I put her in front of some quail and chukar. But, she was still enough of a people lover to crawl up into your lap for a nap. We are excited for her to be in her new home in California where she will be a hunting/companion dog. We hear that their are some decent quail populations near where Bob lives. It is always a joy to see our brittany puppies placed in just the right homes. We recommend that new gun dog owners subscribe to the excellent magazine titled “The Pointing Dog Journal“. Steve Smith and his team publish the most respected magazine geared specifically to hunting upland game with pointing dog breeds like the american brittany.

3 Week Update

Part of what makes for great pups is proper socialization when they are young. At 3 weeks old the pups are pretty helpless so I make my kids sit down to hold the puppies. This helps avoid any accidental dropping of the pups and it gets them down on the same level. At three weeks old these american brittany puppies just need a lot of gentle petting and handling by people. They learn early to like the sound of humans and it won’t take long before they hear you coming and meet you at the gate/door. Below my nephew Jake is giving this liver/white female a good loving and squeezing. Kids and puppies are about as cute as it gets.
